Conclusion

This chapter has contended that the sports film genre performs a crucial functional role, affirming, with rare exceptions, the American Dream against all the evidence that points to its fallacy, particularly for those disadvantaged as a result of race or social class. In common with Hollywood cinema more generally, these films may contain elements that challenge or contradict this trajectory. However, such contradictory elements exist principally to accentuate the ultimate affirmation of the American Dream trajectory, through characters that overcome formidable challenges by way of individual sporting achievement. Indeed, where social problems are depicted or alluded to, they are rarely given a historical or social context and are attributed principally to personal flaws or the fate of protagonists and their communities with their resolution lying in individual achievement, often in the sports film genre via sporting success facilitated by hegemonic White American society. However, as this chapter’s discussion suggests, this is an achievement associated principally with men; women have largely functioned in peripheral roles within the sports film genre until recent years. For much of its history the sports film has been principally a male preserve, a feature examined in the next chapter.
